About the Inherited Hearing Loss Test

About the GJB2-Related Hearing Loss Test

What this test can tell you

This test can tell you if you have one or more gene variants associated with GJB2-related hearing loss. This screening test looks for eight of the most common genetic variants in the GJB2 gene. These genetic variants account for the majority of GJB2-related hearing loss. View the genetic variants we test. If the test shows that you have a genetic variant, you are a carrier for GJB2-related hearing loss. If the test does not detect one of the eight most common GJB2 variants that cause inherited hearing loss, your risk of being a carrier is less, but not zero. Your risk to still be a carrier if no variants are identified depends on your race, ethnicity, and family history.

What this test can't tell you

There are rare variants in the GJB2 gene causing hearing loss that this test is not designed to detect. There are also other genetic variants associated with GJB2-related hearing loss that this test does not detect.

If you prefer to have more comprehensive clinical testing, please speak with your health care provider.

This test alone can't tell you your chance of having a child with inherited hearing loss.
