Advanced diagnosis techniques

Diagnosing benign adrenal tumors involves skilled endocrinologists who have experience diagnosing many endocrine conditions using state-of-the-art testing. Tests may include hormone suppression and stimulation procedures done at the Endocrine Testing Center.

Mayo Clinic radiologists use the latest imaging technology to help distinguish benign adrenal tumors from cancerous tumors. Advanced imaging techniques include computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scanning and Ga-DOTATATE PET-CT scanning.

Minimally invasive surgery techniques

Mayo Clinic endocrine surgeons have extensive experience performing surgical procedures to remove tumors in the adrenal gland.

Surgeons often perform a procedure called an adrenalectomy to remove a benign adrenal tumor. They can often use a minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery for tumors in the adrenal gland. This procedure uses small cuts (incisions) instead of the large cut that's used in open surgery. Benefits may include smaller scars, less pain and a shorter recovery period than after open surgery.
