Biographical summary
Wayne
L. Miller, MD, PhD is a board-certified cardiologist and staff member of the
Mayo Clinic Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Professor of Medicine, Mayo
Clinic College of Medicine, and member of the Mayo Heart Failure Clinic and
Research Group. He attended Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson
University, Philadelphia, PA and specialty training in internal medicine and
cardiovascular diseases at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Research training has
included a 3-year National Institutes of Health post-doctoral fellowship at the
University of Virginia (Dr. Robert Berne's laboratory) in basic research
studying myocardial physiology and myocardial metabolism and energetics and an
NIH fellowship at the Mayo Clinic (Dr. John Burnett’s laboratory) pursuing
research in cardio-renal physiology and mechanisms of heart failure disease.
Research and clinical interests focus on heart failure both chronic and acute
with assessment of the pathophysiologic roles of clinical biomarkers and also
interstitial and intravascular volume congestion in patients with chronic heart
failure and cardio-renal syndrome. Subsequent clinical and basic research has
branched to assessing neurohormonal biomarkers of cardiac function (cardiac
natriuretic peptides ANP and BNP/NT-pro BNP). Ongoing novel studies have been directed at assessing the clinical
significance and prognostic contribution of intravascular volume overload and
it heterogeneity in relation to neurhormonal activation and renal function in
patients with chronic heart failure. Clinical expertise focuses mainly on the
practice of heart failure cardiology, mainly with patients experiencing
advanced heart failure and patients with cardiac complications of amyloidosis.
Additional professional time is spent in resident/cardiology fellow education,
as well as, clinical research working with heart failure patients.
