Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

Less common or rare

  1. Coughing
  2. difficulty in swallowing
  3. dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint (severe)
  4. flushing, redness, or other change in skin color
  5. shortness of breath, troubled breathing, tightness in chest, or wheezing
  6. sudden decrease in amount of urine
  7. swelling of eyelids, face, or lips

Get emergency help immediately if any of the following symptoms of overdose occur:

Signs and symptoms of overdose

  1. Agitation, anxiety, excitement, irritability, nervousness, or restlessness
  2. any loss of hearing
  3. bloody urine
  4. confusion or delirium
  5. convulsions (seizures)
  6. diarrhea (severe or continuing)
  7. dizziness or lightheadedness
  8. drowsiness (severe)
  9. fast or deep breathing
  10. fast or irregular heartbeat (for medicines containing caffeine
  11. frequent urination (for medicines containing caffeine)
  12. hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there)
  13. increased sensitivity to touch or pain (for medicines containing caffeine)
  14. increased sweating
  15. loss of appetite
  16. muscle trembling or twitching (for medicines containing caffeine)
  17. nausea or vomiting (continuing, sometimes with blood)
  18. ringing or buzzing in ears (continuing)
  19. seeing flashes of lights (for medicines containing caffeine)
  20. stomach cramps or pain (severe or continuing)
  21. swelling, pain, or tenderness in the upper abdomen or stomach area
  22. trouble in sleeping (for medicines containing caffeine)
  23. uncontrollable flapping movements of the hands, especially in elderly patients
  24. unexplained fever
  25. unexplained fever

Signs of overdose in children

  1. Changes in behavior
  2. drowsiness or tiredness
  3. fast or deep breathing

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

Less common or rare

  1. Bloody or black, tarry stools
  2. bloody or cloudy urine
  3. fever with or without chills (not present before treatment and not caused by the condition being treated)
  4. pain in lower back and/or side (severe and/or sharp)
  5. pinpoint red spots on skin
  6. skin rash, hives, or itching
  7. sores, ulcers, or white spots on lips or in mouth
  8. sore throat (not present before treatment and not caused by the condition being treated)
  9. stuffy nose
  10. swelling of face, fingers, feet, or lower legs
  11. unusual bleeding or bruising
  12. unusual tiredness or weakness
  13. vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
  14. weight gain
  15. yellow eyes or skin

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  1. Heartburn or indigestion (for medicines containing aspirin)
  2. nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain (for medicines containing aspirin)

Less common

  1. Drowsiness (for medicines containing salicylamide)
  2. trouble in sleeping, nervousness, or jitters (for medicines containing caffeine)

After you stop using this medicine, it may still produce some side effects that need attention. During this period of time, check with your doctor immediately if you notice the following side effects:

Rare

  1. Bloody or cloudy urine
  2. decreased urination
  3. swelling of face, fingers, feet, or lower legs
  4. weight gain

Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional.
