Liver cancer begins in the cells of the liver itself (primary liver cancer). Cancer that starts in another part of the body and spreads to the liver is known as metastatic cancer and is named after the organ where it started (such as metastatic colon cancer that spreads to the liver). The most common form of primary liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma, which starts in the cells that filter toxins from your blood.
Causes of liver cancer include infection with the hepatitis B or C virus, alcohol use, or fatty liver disease. It can also result from environmental factors, genetic diseases, or conditions such as obesity and diabetes.
Liver cancer is challenging to treat. Often people don't have symptoms until it's quite advanced.
