Sumi S. Nair, M.B.B.S., M.D.

Sumi Sukumaran Nair, M.D., is a nephrologist in the division of Nephrology with primary clinical focus in kidney and pancreas transplant.

Areas of clinical expertise include:

• Evaluation of patients before kidney transplantation, pancreas transplantation, simultaneous liver-kidney and simultaneous heart kidney-transplantation
• Management of immunosuppression after transplantation
• Evaluation and management of the complications after kidney or pancreas transplantation
• Evaluation of living kidney donors
• Paired kidney exchange

Research interests include outcomes of kidney and pancreas transplantation , transplant immunology, medication adherence and mineral bone disease after transplantation.

In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Nair is active in research and education.

Dr. Nair is the program director for Transplant Nephrology Fellowship and is the assistant block director for the renal block for the School of Medicine.

Dr. Nair is a member of Mayo Clinic's Kidney Transplant Program and Pancreas Transplant Program in Phoenix, Arizona. Her work includes the evaluation and longitudinal medical management of patients undergoing kidney, pancreas and combined-organ transplantation, including simultaneous pancreas-kidney, liver-kidney and heart-kidney transplantation.

Her additional clinical interests include acute and chronic transplant rejection, recurrent glomerulonephritis and BK nephropathy. She works with multidisciplinary transplant teams to manage immunosuppression, monitor transplant function and address complications that may affect recipients after transplantation.

Dr. Nair completed Nephrology fellowship at Stanford university and transplant nephrology fellowship training through Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education in Arizona. She is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and provides care in English and Hindi and Malayalam.

Her contributions to education have been recognized with the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education Program Director Award and the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine Golden Apple Award. She also contributes nationally through service on the American Society of Nephrology Training and Workforce Committee and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones Committee. She chairs the national program directors' workgroup and currently is a member of the Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Training Accreditation Board of Managers.
