Manal F. Abdelmalek, M.D., M.P.H., is a Professor of Medicine and Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Abdelmalek provides specialized care for people with chronic liver disease and other complex hepatology conditions. She also serves as director and institutional lead of the MASLD Clinical Research Program, guiding efforts to advance scientific discovery and improve patient outcomes through clinical and translational research.

Areas of expertise

Dr. Abdelmalek focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of liver disorders, with particular expertise in metabolic dysfunction associated with steatotic liver diseases and cirrhosis.

Her clinical interests include:

  • Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD): Evaluation, care planning, and advanced management strategies.
  • Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH): Comprehensive care and integration of lifestyle and pharmacologic therapies.
  • Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis: Early detection, complications management, and coordination of multidisciplinary care.
  • Hepatology-focused clinical trials: Access to innovative therapies and disease-modifying treatments through research participation.

Research and expertise

Dr. Abdelmalek leads national and international research initiatives aimed at improving the understanding and treatment of metabolic liver diseases, including MASLD and NASH. She has served as principal investigator on numerous federally funded and industry-sponsored trials studying novel therapies for advanced liver disorders. Her work has contributed to developing clinical guidelines, advancing diagnostic approaches, and shaping treatment paradigms for fatty liver disease. Dr. Abdelmalek also mentors medical trainees, and early-career investigators and remains actively engaged in professional service through organizations such as the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the American College of Gastroenterology.

Other common conditions she treats:

  • Alcohol-associated liver disease, hemochromatosis, autoimmune hepatitis, cholestatic liver disease, viral hepatitis
  • Clinical trials lending early access to emerging therapies for the treatment of MASH and MASH-related cirrhosis

Short quote about my care philosophy:

"Compassionate care is at the heart of my practice; treating each patient as a unique individual while striving for excellence in clinical care and extending such care to clinical research when the potential for emerging therapies holds more promise in treating chronic liver disease than existing treatments. Being a physician is both an honor and a privilege. I aim to empower and uplift each patient I see in hopes of ensuring their best clinical outcomes."

Outside of work, Dr. Abdelmalek enjoys spending time with her children and family, listening to music, cooking, and traveling.
