    Symptoms we assess

Some symptoms may suggest an underlying respiratory condition.

    • Breathlessness
    • Chest pain
    • Chronic cough
    • Wheeze

In the most severe cases, you should get immediate medical attention.

    Respiratory conditions we treat

Our team provides diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of respiratory issues, from common pulmonary issues to complex concerns.

    • These cover disorders of the airways that make it difficult to breathe comfortably. This includes, but is not limited to:

      • Asthma
      • Bronchitis
      • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
      • Emphysema
      • Bronchiectasis
    • Breathlessness during exercise can have many causes, including heart conditions or lung problems. If breathlessness is persistent, worsening, or limiting your daily activity, a respiratory assessment can help identify the cause.

Our respiratory specialists use targeted testing to understand how your lungs and heart respond to exertion, allowing precise diagnosis and an appropriate approach to treatment.

    • These are conditions that require specialist or multidisciplinary input, often needing ongoing medical support to control symptoms.

      • Aviation-related respiratory concerns.
      • Bronchiectasis.
      • Hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
      • Interstitial lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and lung disease.
      • Long COVID.
      • Sarcoidosis.
    • These are infections of the lungs, often caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. Whilst mild cases may be helped with rest, severe infections require medical attention.

      • Chest infections, including pneumonia.
      • Tuberculosis.
      • Whooping cough (pertussis).
      • COVID
    • Our private respiratory services cover the diagnosis and treatment of cancers, tumours and nodules.

This will typically involve discussion of cases within an expert multidisciplinary team of lung specialists.

    • These are conditions affecting the lining of the lungs (the pleura).

      • Pleural conditions and pleural effusion
      • Pneumothorax
    • These are conditions affecting blood flow to the lungs.

      • Pulmonary embolism (lung blood clots)
    • This covers conditions affecting breathing during sleep.

      • Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
      • Snoring and sleep-related breathing issues.

    Expert respiratory assessment

Accurate diagnosis is essential to effective respiratory care. Mayo Clinic Healthcare uses state-of-the-art tools to assess breathing and lung function.

    • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET).
    • Lung function testing.
    • Imaging, including X-ray, CT scans and ultrasound.

Through this form of respiratory assessment, our specialists can come to the right diagnosis quickly, enabling them to form a treatment plan when it can be most effective. Results are reviewed by experienced specialists, allowing treatment to begin promptly and with confidence.

    Multidisciplinary, integrated care

Many respiratory conditions overlap with other medical specialities. Mayo Healthcare Clinic’s collaborative model of care ensures that your respiratory consultants work with their colleagues across multiple disciplines to provide the best possible care. This will often include their colleagues working in:

    • Cardiology
    • Radiology and advanced imaging: this includes chest x-rays, CT scans and ultrasound
    • Preventative and exercise physiology
    • Immunology

This team-based approach ensures coordinated diagnostics and streamlined treatment planning, particularly for people with complex or overlapping conditions. This helps to avoid fragmenting your care and provides a more complete understanding of your health.

What to expect from your appointment

This will depend on the severity of the condition, but for concerns that are serious but not immediately life-threatening, you will have a 45-minute appointment with our consultants.

Here, you will have the time to outline your symptoms in detail.

After this, our private respiratory specialists will provide their opinion on what treatment is most likely to help. This may include further tests, many of which can be performed on-site in our London clinic just off Harley Street.

    Private health insurance

Mayo Clinic Healthcare works with all major private health insurance providers, including AXA PPP, Aviva, BUPA, Vitality Health and WPA. Self-pay arrangements are also available.
