MRI scan

Mayo Clinic Healthcare’s private MRI scan uses a powerful magnet combined with special radio frequency waves to create very detailed images of the body.

MRI machines are noisy, so you will be given earplugs and headphones to block out the noise as much as possible. You can also listen to some music during the scan.

Due to the powerful magnet inside the MRI scanner, it is very important to ensure that you remove all metal before you go into the scanner room. Please let us know if you have any implants, devices, or monitors before your appointment to ensure you are safe to have a scan.

    • At Mayo Clinic Healthcare, our private MRI scans are used to diagnose a number of conditions, including:

      • Brain and nerves
      • Head and neck
      • Abdomen
      • Digestive tract
      • Breast
      • Female pelvis
      • Male pelvis
      • General pelvis
      • Vascular system
      • Bones and joints

MRI can be used to take images of all parts of the body, such as muscles, bones, and organs, such as the heart, liver, kidneys, and more. MRI can also detect cancers and other conditions.

    • Due to the strong magnet inside the MRI scanner, it is very important to ensure that you remove all metal before you go into the scanner room. This includes jewellery, coins, keys, credit cards, phones, and watches.

To ensure you are safe to have a scan, you will need to let us know if you have any implants, devices, or monitors. We will ask you to complete a safety questionnaire before you receive your scan.

      We will ask if you:

      • Have any metallic implants, a pacemaker, ICD, stents, or surgical clips, or any other implants
      • Had any surgery in the past
      • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
      • Have any allergies, especially to our contrast dye called gadolinium
      • Have any problems with your kidneys
      • Had any accidents in the past where metal may have entered your body and may still be there
    • During the MRI scan, you will lie on a padded table that moves slowly into the scanner. It is important to remain as still as possible so that clear images can be obtained. The radiographer will be able to see and hear you at all times and can speak to you through an intercom.

You will also be given a buzzer to press if you need assistance or feel uncomfortable at any point.

    • The MRI scanner is like a tunnel. However, being claustrophobic does not necessarily mean that you cannot have a scan. Our kind and patient team will ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

Our scanner is 70cm in diameter and is a “wide-bore” scanner, which provides increased patient comfort.

Some patients prefer to have oral sedation before their scan. If you feel that you might benefit from having sedation, please call the Imaging department ahead of your appointment to arrange this.

    • An MRI can be very loud due to the way the scanner produces the images. We will give you earplugs and headphones to protect your hearing. You will also be given a buzzer that you can squeeze to get our attention if need be.

There are lots of lights in the scanner, and fans blow cool air around you for increased comfort. The MRI room is kept cool so that the scanner works optimally, so we will offer you blankets to keep you comfortable.

    • Your private MRI scan can take anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes, depending on the examination and area of the body being scanned.

    • Once your examination has been completed, you can resume your normal activities and eat and drink normally.

    • Your images will be sent to our radiologist for reporting, which should be completed within 24 hours. The final report will be sent to your referring consultant.
