Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Accumulation of pus
  2. black, tarry stools
  3. blurred vision
  4. chest pain
  5. chills
  6. cough
  7. diarrhea
  8. difficulty in swallowing and breathing
  9. dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position
  10. fever
  11. general feeling of discomfort or illness
  12. headache
  13. hives, itching, skin rash
  14. muscle pain or stiffness
  15. pain in the joints, lower back, or side
  16. painful or difficult urination
  17. pounding in the ears
  18. puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  19. slow or fast heartbeat
  20. sore throat
  21. sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth
  22. stuffy or runny nose
  23. swollen glands
  24. swollen, red, tender area of the infection
  25. tightness in the chest
  26. unexplained bleeding or bruising
  27. unusual tiredness or weakness
  28. weight loss
  29. yellowing of the skin and eyes

Less common

  1. Cracks in the skin at the corners of the mouth
  2. soreness or redness around the fingernails and toenails
  3. vaginal burning, itching, or discharge
  4. white patches in the mouth, throat, or on the tongue


  1. Clay-colored stools
  2. confusion
  3. coughing that sometimes produces a pink frothy sputum
  4. dark or bloody urine
  5. difficult, fast, noisy breathing
  6. dry mouth
  7. fainting or loss of consciousness
  8. fast or irregular breathing
  9. general feeling of discomfort, illness, or weakness
  10. increased sweating
  11. loss of appetite
  12. nausea
  13. pain, tenderness, and swelling of the foot or leg
  14. pale skin with blue lips and fingernails
  15. pinpoint red spots on the skin
  16. severe constipation
  17. stomach pain
  18. sunken eyes
  19. swollen, painful, or tender lymph glands in the armpit
  20. vomiting

Incidence not known

  1. Blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
  2. bloody nose
  3. change in mental status
  4. chest discomfort
  5. difficulty in speaking
  6. double vision
  7. heavier menstrual periods
  8. inability to move the arms, legs, or facial muscles
  9. inability to speak
  10. muscle aches and weakness
  11. new mole, change in size, shape, or color of an existing mole, or a mole that leaks fluid or bleeds
  12. numbness or tingling in the fingers, face, or feet
  13. pain or discomfort in the arms, jaw, back, or neck
  14. red, irritated eyes
  15. red, scaling, or crusted skin
  16. red skin lesions often with a purple center
  17. seizures
  18. slow speech

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  1. Belching
  2. discomfort, upset, or pain in the stomach
  3. ear congestion
  4. heartburn
  5. indigestion
  6. loss of voice
  7. nasal congestion
  8. pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones
