Markus K. Sonntag, M.D.

Dr. Sonntag, earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Florida, graduating with highest honors, and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Miami. He completed internal medicine residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX and is board certified in internal medicine.

After beginning his career as an academic hospitalist at St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital/Texas Heart Institute in Houston he relocated back to Florida in 2005 and completed another 2 years of full time hospital work at St. Vincents Riverside before establishing an outpatient private practice in 2007.  His experience includes seeing patients across the spectrum of care encompassing office, hospital and rehab facility duties.

Prior to joining Mayo Clinic in 2025, Dr. Sonntag practiced for 15 years with Ascension Health/St. Vincents. He was the lead physician for a chronic illness focused clinic, served as a medical director overseeing multiple offices and helped work with administrators and physicians in achieving quality care goals.

His focus is not only managing multiple complex medical conditions but also primary and secondary preventative health measures that may allow patients to lead their most functional life. He believes in individualized evidence based treatment plans and meeting patients in the middle, wherever they may be in their healthcare journey.

Dr. Sonntag's outside interests including golf, in-shore fishing, clay target sports, snow skiing and spending time with his family and Labrador retriever. He is married to an OB/GYN physician, they have one son and one daughter. During time off he and his wife enjoy traveling to new destinations, trying new restaurants and attending University of Florida football games.
