John A. Martin, M.D.

John Anthony Martin, M.D., is an advanced interventional endoscopist and Associate Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Martin specializes in complex pancreaticobiliary disorders and minimally invasive approaches to diagnosis and treatment. His clinical practice focuses on advanced therapeutic endoscopy, including ERCP and procedures for bile duct and pancreatic conditions, surgical complications, and transplant-related challenges.

Guided by a patient-first philosophy, Dr. Martin states: "I care sincerely about each patient first and foremost, then treat expertly to cure, improve, and maintain health." He also has a strong commitment to advancing innovation and quality in endoscopy practice, education, and team development.

Research and professional highlights

Dr. Martin is an associate professor and consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and previously served as Associate Chair for Endoscopy and Program Director for the advanced endoscopy training program. He has over three decades of experience in clinical leadership and education, including founding the advanced endoscopy fellowship program and serving as Chief of Endoscopy at Northwestern University.

Board-certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, Dr. Martin earned his medical degree at the University of Virginia and completed residency training at University Hospitals of Cleveland-Case Western Reserve University. He pursued fellowship training in gastroenterology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and advanced interventional endoscopy at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Martin has received numerous honors, including the Distinguished Service Award of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and multiple "Best Doctors" recognitions. He is a Fellow of ASGE and has served in national leadership roles for over 30 years, including committee chairmanships, task force leadership, and service as a Governing Board Councilor.

Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Martin enjoys biking, hiking, boating, and following Minnesota sports teams. He and his wife stay active in supporting school athletics with their two sons. He also has a passion for public speaking — and a fun fact: he is a former commercial radio disc jockey.
