Aliya Gulamhusein, M.D.

Dr. Aliya Gulamhusein is a hepatologist and Senior Associate Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She specializes in the care of people with autoimmune and cholestatic liver diseases, including primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Dr. Gulamhusein provides comprehensive, patient-centered care for individuals with complex liver conditions, from diagnosis and medical management through advanced therapies and transplantation when needed.

Before joining Mayo Clinic, Dr. Gulamhusein served as Co-Lead of the Autoimmune Liver Disease Program at the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease, University Health Network, and held multiple leadership and academic appointments at the University of Toronto. She has also served as Program Director for an autoimmune liver disease fellowship and as hepatology lead for adults with congenital heart disease-related liver complications.

Dr. Gulamhusein holds board certification in gastroenterology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with advanced fellowship training in hepatology and liver transplantation from Mayo Clinic. She also earned a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.

Research and professional highlights

Dr. Gulamhusein's research focuses on improving outcomes in autoimmune and cholestatic liver diseases through clinical trials, real-world data analysis, and the development of precision-medicine strategies. She has published extensively, contributes to national and international collaborations, and serves as a steering committee member for the International PSC Study Group and other key research initiatives.

Her leadership roles have included serving on editorial boards, directing fellowship programs, and supporting diversity and mentorship initiatives in academic medicine.
