In the Memory Disorder Clinic at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida, a team of doctors trained in brain and nervous system conditions (neurologists) and other specialties evaluates your condition and coordinates your care.

Your doctor conducts a physical and neurological examination and checks for signs of conditions that may impair your memory and thinking skills. You and your family members discuss your symptoms and medical history with your doctor.

Your doctor asks you several questions and conducts tests to assess your memory and thinking abilities. These abilities also are called cognitive skills. Your doctor also may have you undergo several tests to rule out conditions that may be causing your symptoms.

Tests may include:

  • Mental status and neuropsychological tests.
  • Blood tests.
  • Computerized tomography (CT scan).
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • Position emission tomography (PET) or single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT).

After you complete your evaluation, you meet with your doctor to discuss the results. Your doctor works with you to develop a treatment plan to help you manage your condition. With your permission, your Mayo healthcare team also works with your primary care doctor to coordinate follow-up care.

You and your family also may meet with an education specialist to discuss your doctor's recommendations and tips on maintaining brain health. During this visit, additional information and resources for services within the community are available to be shared.

The Memory Disorder Clinic offers you and your family the opportunity to attend training and educational programs about Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Support groups for caregivers also are available for families and caregivers.

Research includes studying brains obtained after autopsy of people with Alzheimer's disease or related conditions to evaluate and understand these conditions. The Department of Neuroscience in Florida focuses on Alzheimer's disease and related conditions. Researchers also study genetics in Alzheimer's disease and other conditions.

The Memory Disorder Clinic at Mayo Clinic in Florida is related to the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. The center at Mayo Clinic in Florida and Minnesota is funded and designated as an Alzheimer's disease center by the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health.
