Copay and Grant Assistance Program

Mayo Clinic's external funding team comprises financial counselors whose role is to provide financial navigation services and secure available copay and grant assistance programs for our patients.

Copay and grant assistance program funding is available for a wide array of conditions and uses. Our team focuses on funds that can help patients pay for their out-of-pocket expenses such as copays, coinsurance and deductibles, as well as for insurance premiums and related items. Some funding programs may even cover additional expenses such as travel and lodging.

Our team will reach out to you to obtain a Release of Information (ROI) form and explain the fund for which you might be eligible.

The type of patient assistance funding you might qualify for depends on your diagnoses, type of insurance and types of services you are receiving.

Grant Assistance Programs

Grant assistance programs funded by various organizations include charitable foundations and pharmaceutical companies. Eligibility varies by disease fund and type of grant.

In general, grants have multiple criteria:

  • You're getting treatment for the disease named in the disease fund.
  • Your treatment must be listed as a covered service for your disease fund.
  • You have health insurance that covers your qualifying medication or product. Note: Health insurance requirements vary by fund.
  • Your income must fall at or below the specified income level.
  • You must reside and receive treatment in the United States or U.S. territories. Note: U.S. citizenship is not required.

Note: Some grants are available to all insurance types, while some are limited to Medicare insurance types only.

In 2023, Mayo Clinic obtained more than $10 million in approved grant funds for our patients.

Copay assistance programs

  • Copay assistance programs are funded by pharmaceutical companies to alleviate commercial insured patient out-of-pocket medical expenses associated with patients' infusions or clinic-administered medicines.
  • The only eligibility criteria for copay assistance programs is that the patient only have commercial insurance. There are no income limitations for copay assistance programs. Note: Medicare Advantage products are not considered commercial insurance for purposes of copay assistance programs.
  • Copay assistance programs cover only drug and administration fees. They will not cover other services, including radiology, labs and other diagnostics.
