Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Some side effects will have signs or symptoms that you can see or feel. Your doctor may watch for others by doing certain tests

Tacrine may cause some serious side effects, including liver problems. You and your doctor should discuss the good this medicine will do as well as the risks of receiving it.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Clumsiness or unsteadiness
  2. diarrhea
  3. loss of appetite
  4. nausea
  5. vomiting

Less common

  1. Fainting
  2. fast or pounding heartbeat
  3. fever
  4. high or low blood pressure
  5. skin rash
  6. slow heartbeat

Rare

  1. Aggression, irritability, or nervousness
  2. change in stool color
  3. convulsions (seizures)
  4. cough, tightness in chest, troubled breathing, or wheezing
  5. stiffness of arms or legs, slow movement, or trembling and shaking of hands and fingers
  6. trouble in urinating
  7. yellow eyes or skin

Symptoms of overdose

  1. Convulsions (seizures)
  2. greatly increased sweating
  3. greatly increased watering of mouth
  4. increasing muscle weakness
  5. low blood pressure
  6. nausea (severe)
  7. shock (fast weak pulse, irregular breathing, large pupils)
  8. slow heartbeat
  9. vomiting (severe)

  1. Liver problems

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  1. Abdominal or stomach pain or cramping
  2. dizziness
  3. headache
  4. indigestion
  5. muscle aches or pain

Less common

  1. Belching
  2. fast breathing
  3. flushing of skin
  4. general feeling of discomfort or illness
  5. increased sweating
  6. increased urination
  7. increased watering of eyes
  8. increased watering of mouth
  9. runny nose
  10. swelling of feet or lower legs
  11. trouble in sleeping
