يُجري أطباء مايو كلينك تجارب سريرية على علاجات جديدة للإمساك والإسهال المرتبطين بمتلازمة القولون المتهيج. ويعكف الباحثون في برنامج أبحاث علم الأعصاب المعوية على دراسة الآليات الأساسية في الجهاز الهضمي لتحسين تشخيص اضطرابات السبيل الهضمي، ومنها متلازمة القولون المتهيج. يدرس باحثو مايو كلينك أيضًا متلازمة القولون المتهيج في مختبر الحَيُّوم الدقيق المعوي.
