Dr. Ballinger practices Acute Care General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. She has also practiced as a vascular surgeon. Her work involves the evaluation of patients with emergency surgical problems requiring urgent or emergent surgery and then performing those operations for them. Emergency problem examples include shock, traumatic injury, bowel infections or injury, sepsis, organ failures, malignancy and bleeding. An integral part of this patient care includes managing them in the surgical intensive care unit both before and after surgery. This care is complemented by teaching medical students, residents and fellows in these specialties. Patient safety and maintaining a high level of quality are areas of interest and emphasis every day.
