Mayo Clinic's approach

Mayo Clinic dermatologists are highly trained and experienced in Mohs surgery. This expertise means you'll receive exactly the care you need.

Collaboration

Mayo Clinic experts work in teams to provide the best care and best possible results. In addition to dermatologists, your team may include specialists in pathology, general surgery, plastic surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, ophthalmology, and ear, nose and throat (ENT, or otorhinolaryngology), as well as other areas as needed.

Experience

Mohs surgery can be technically challenging. Many dermatologists can perform Mohs surgery, since dermatologists learn about Mohs surgery in their medical training. But some dermatologists have undergone specialized training to learn more about the procedure and become more proficient in Mohs surgery.

At Mayo Clinic, Mohs surgery is performed by dermatologists who have undergone a year or more of special training in this procedure. Mayo Clinic also offers a fellowship program to train dermatologists in Mohs surgery.

Each year, Mayo Clinic doctors perform more than 4,400 Mohs surgeries. Mayo Clinic doctors are well-known for their expertise and experience in treating rare skin cancers.

Innovative treatment

Mayo Clinic's innovative strategies make treatment as effective and comfortable as possible. For example:

  • You can take medicine to help calm you and listen to music during surgery.
  • If you have more than one area of skin cancer that requires Mohs surgery, they can be treated at the same time.
  • If your skin cancer is very large and your wound requires specialized nursing care, you can be admitted to the hospital.
