Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Overview

At Mayo Clinic, a highly trained team of supportive, compassionate specialists from psychology and psychiatry work together to thoroughly evaluate patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Care team members specialize in identifying the most appropriate combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and drug treatment for newly diagnosed patients, and recommending treatment plan modifications for those previously diagnosed. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are essential in helping patients manage OCD symptoms to lead more balanced lives.

Mayo Clinic in Minnesota offers a unique intensive five-day OCD treatment program for children and adolescents. Pioneered by Mayo psychologists, this exposure and response prevention program helps patients better manage anxiety by facing their fears. It is ideal for patients who cannot find suitable treatment in their home state or country. Read more about the OCD treatment program.

About Obsessive-compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by unreasonable fears and thoughts (obsessions) that a person responds to by engaging in uncontrollable, repetitive behaviors (compulsions). A person with OCD feels compelled to perform compulsive rituals so that everyday activities will feel safe and comfortable.

People with OCD feel tortured by the general feeling that something bad will happen. Some individuals with OCD wash their hands until they bleed, check things over and over again, or constantly recite certain phrases. The behaviors associated with OCD can take over a person's life and cause problems with school, work and relationships. It is estimated that about 5 million children, adolescents and adults in the United States suffer from this debilitating disorder.
