Multiple Sclerosis

Overview

Mayo Clinic has extensive experience treating people with multiple sclerosis (MS), suspected MS or related disorders. Each year, Mayo Clinic provides care for nearly 2,500 patients with MS, a testament to the clinic's depth and breadth of expertise.

The majority of patients are seen initially by neurologists with expertise in all neurological disorders. In addition, Mayo Clinic MS specialists are available to others in the practice (neurologists, internists, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, rheumatologists, psychiatrists, etc.) who request their assistance in evaluating and planning treatment of patients. People referred to Mayo Clinic may be directed to these MS specialists if there is an initial opinion that this category of disorders may be responsible for their illness.

Diagnosis

Patients may need extensive testing to confirm the diagnosis and determine the the type of MS. Mayo Clinic's efficient practice generally allows people to complete a full diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation within three to five working days and many people will complete their evaluation within two days. Treatment Options

Treatment involves managing the symptoms of multiple sclerosis as well as treating the disease before permanent damage causes symptoms. Treatment may include medications, physical and occupational therapy and experimental therapies. Read more about multiple sclerosis treatment options.

About Multiple Sclerosis

MS is a disease of the central nervous system that includes the brain, spinal cord and nerves. MS and related diseases are called demyelinating diseases because they result from damage to myelin (the insulating covering of nerves). There are several types of multiple sclerosis. Read more about the different types of multiple sclerosis. Members of the multiple sclerosis group specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of demyelinating disorders. The group is also involved with laboratory research and clinical trials to better understand the cause of MS and to develop better treatments.
