Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

Less common

  1. Acid or sour stomach
  2. belching
  3. diarrhea
  4. heartburn
  5. indigestion
  6. nausea
  7. stomach discomfort, upset, or pain
  8. vomiting

Rare

  1. Abdominal or stomach cramping, burning, or tenderness
  2. back or leg pains
  3. bleeding gums
  4. blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
  5. bloody or black, tarry stools
  6. blue lips and fingernails
  7. blurred vision
  8. breast enlargement and tenderness
  9. burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, "pins and needles", or tingling feelings
  10. burning upper abdominal pain
  11. canker sores
  12. change in consciousness
  13. change in hearing
  14. chest pain, discomfort, or burning
  15. clay colored stools
  16. cloudy or bloody urine
  17. confusion
  18. continuing diarrhea
  19. cough or hoarseness
  20. coughing that sometimes produces a pink frothy sputum
  21. cracks in the skin
  22. dark urine
  23. decreased appetite
  24. decreased vision or any change in vision
  25. depression
  26. difficult or labored breathing
  27. difficulty with swallowing
  28. dilated neck veins
  29. dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying or sitting position
  30. double vision
  31. dry mouth
  32. extreme fatigue
  33. false sense of well-being
  34. feeling of unreality
  35. feeling of warmth
  36. fever with or without chills
  37. flushed, dry skin
  38. fruit-like breath odor
  39. general body swelling
  40. greatly decreased frequency of urination or amount of urine
  41. hair loss
  42. headache
  43. heavier menstrual periods
  44. hives or welts
  45. increased hunger
  46. increased sweating
  47. increased thirst
  48. increased urination
  49. irregular breathing
  50. irritation and swelling of the eye
  51. itching skin
  52. jerky movements of the head, face, mouth, and neck
  53. joint pain
  54. large, flat, blue or purplish patches in the skin
  55. large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or sex organs
  56. loss of balance control
  57. loss of bladder control
  58. loss of consciousness
  59. loss of hearing
  60. loss of heat from the body
  61. lower back or side pain
  62. mask-like face
  63. mental confusion
  64. mood swings
  65. muscle aches, pains, or weakness
  66. muscle spasm or jerking of all extremities
  67. nervousness
  68. noisy, rattling breathing
  69. nosebleeds
  70. numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, or lips
  71. pain in ankles or knees
  72. pain or discomfort in upper stomach or throat
  73. pain with swallowing
  74. painful or difficult urination
  75. painful, red lumps under the skin, mostly on the legs
  76. pale skin
  77. persistent bleeding or oozing from puncture sites, mouth, or nose
  78. personality changes
  79. pinpoint red or purple spots on the skin
  80. pounding in the ears
  81. puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  82. red skin lesions, often with a purple center
  83. red, irritated eyes
  84. red, swollen skin
  85. redness of the face, neck, arms and occasionally, upper chest
  86. scaly skin
  87. seeing double
  88. seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there
  89. seizures
  90. sense of detachment from self or body
  91. severe constipation
  92. severe mental changes
  93. severe or continuing stomach pain
  94. shortness of breath
  95. shuffling walk
  96. skin rash
  97. slow, fast, irregular, pounding, or racing heartbeat or pulse
  98. slowed movements
  99. slurred speech
  100. small red or purple spots on the skin
  101. sore throat
  102. sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or tongue or inside the mouth
  103. stiffness of the arms and legs
  104. sudden loss of consciousness
  105. sugar in the urine
  106. swelling in the legs and ankles
  107. swelling of the face, fingers, feet, or lower legs
  108. swelling of the breasts or breast soreness in both females and males
  109. swollen or painful glands
  110. tightness in the chest
  111. trembling and shaking of the fingers and hands
  112. troubled breathing at rest
  113. troubled breathing with exertion
  114. unexplained weight loss
  115. unpleasant breath odor
  116. unsteadiness or awkwardness
  117. unusual bleeding or bruising
  118. unusual tiredness or weakness
  119. vaginal bleeding
  120. vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
  121. weakness in the arms, hands, legs, or feet
  122. weight gain
  123. wheezing
  124. yellow eyes or skin

Incidence not known

  1. Frequent urge to defecate
  2. rectal bleeding, burning, dryness, itching, or pain
  3. straining while passing stool

Get emergency help immediately if any of the following symptoms of overdose occur:

Symptoms of overdose

  1. Confusion about identity, place, and time
  2. severe headache
  3. unusual drowsiness, dullness, or feeling of sluggishness

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

  1. Mild headache

Less common

  1. Continuing ringing or buzzing or other unexplained noise in the ears
  2. difficulty having a bowel movement (stool)
  3. discouragement
  4. feeling sad or empty
  5. general feeling of discomfort or illness
  6. hearing loss
  7. irritability
  8. loss of interest or pleasure
  9. sleepiness
  10. trouble with concentrating

Rare

  1. Anxiety
  2. bloated full feeling
  3. changes in patterns and rhythms of speech
  4. excess air or gas in the stomach or intestines
  5. feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
  6. involuntary muscle movements
  7. lightheadedness
  8. passing gas
  9. sensation of spinning
  10. sleeplessness
  11. tiredness
  12. trouble with speaking
  13. trouble sleeping
  14. unable to sleep
