Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Dry skin

Less common

  1. Breakdown of the skin
  2. burning or stinging skin
  3. hives or welts
  4. irritation and redness of the skin
  5. itching
  6. numbness of the fingers
  7. raised, dark red, or wart-like spots on the skin, especially when used on the face
  8. skin rash

Rare

  1. Pain
  2. red rash with watery, yellow-colored, or pus filled blisters
  3. skin rash, encrusted, scaly, and oozing
  4. swelling
  5. tenderness
  6. thick yellow to honey-colored crusts
  7. warmth on the skin

Incidence not known

  1. Abdominal or stomach pain
  2. backache
  3. black, tarry stools
  4. bleeding gums
  5. blistering, burning, crusting, dryness, or flaking of the skin
  6. blood in the urine or stools
  7. blurred vision
  8. chest pain
  9. cough or hoarseness
  10. dry mouth
  11. facial hair growth in females
  12. fever or chills
  13. flushed, dry skin
  14. fractures
  15. fruit-like breath odor
  16. full or round face, neck, or trunk
  17. increased hunger
  18. increased thirst or urination
  19. irritability
  20. itching, scaling, severe redness, soreness, or swelling of the skin
  21. loss of sexual desire or ability
  22. lower back or side pain
  23. menstrual irregularities
  24. muscle wasting
  25. nausea
  26. painful or difficult urination
  27. pinpoint red spots on the skin
  28. redness and scaling around the mouth
  29. shortness of breath
  30. sneezing
  31. sore throat
  32. sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth
  33. sugar in the urine
  34. sweating
  35. swelling of the throat
  36. swollen glands
  37. thinning of the skin with easy bruising, especially when used on the face or where the skin folds together (e.g. between the fingers)
  38. tightness in the chest
  39. troubled breathing
  40. unexplained weight loss
  41. unusual bleeding or bruising
  42. unusual tiredness or weakness
  43. vomiting
  44. wheezing

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

Less common

  1. Body aches or pain
  2. change in hearing
  3. common cold
  4. diarrhea
  5. difficulty with breathing
  6. ear congestion
  7. ear drainage
  8. earache or pain in the ear
  9. headache
  10. loss of voice
  11. nasal congestion
  12. runny nose

Rare

  1. Burning, itching, and pain in hairy areas, or pus at the root of the hair
  2. stuffy nose

Incidence not known

  1. Acne or pimples
  2. burning and itching of the skin with pinhead-sized red blisters
  3. increased hair growth on the forehead, back, arms, and legs
  4. lightening of normal skin color
  5. lightening of treated areas of dark skin
  6. reddish purple lines on the arms, face, legs, trunk, or groin
