HIPEC offers a cure to some patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis

A retrospective study of intermediate-term outcomes for patients treated with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) indicates the treatment was most successful for patients with resectable metastatic appendiceal cancer, metastatic colon cancer and peritoneal mesothelioma.

Laser surgery spares patients with brain lesions from craniotomy

At Mayo Clinic, minimally invasive laser surgery is available to treat certain brain lesions. MRI-guided laser ablation has been used to treat metastatic brain tumors and radiation necrosis for only about nine months, but preliminary results are promising.

Research

High prices for cancer drugs affect patient care
Americans with cancer pay 50 to 100 percent more for the same patented drug than patients in other countries. In a paper published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, researchers recommend solutions to help control and reduce the high cost of cancer drugs.

Methylated DNA markers may lead to noninvasive cancer screening
Mayo researchers have identified the presence and origin of cancerous cells in patients' gastrointestinal tracts with about 80 percent accuracy by collecting and identifying methylated DNA from tumors.
