Patient Care

Small minority of patients have truly refractory IBD

Many patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) fail to respond to standard therapies or lose response over time. But very few of them are truly refractory to treatment.

Rituximab promising for subset of AIP patients

The chimeric monoclonal anti-CD20 antibody, rituximab, can induce and maintain remission in steroid- and immunomodulator-refractory patients with autoimmune pancreatitis.

Pediatric Care

Studies prompt new look at pediatric CD

Two new studies suggest that the timing of childhood exposure to gluten doesn't increase the risk of celiac disease and that genetic testing may be better than serology for screening high-risk children younger than 2.

Research

Trials to evaluate new agents for PSC

No effective treatments exist for primary sclerosing cholangitis other than liver transplantation. Mayo Clinic researchers are now enrolling patients in trials that will evaluate potential PSC therapies, including a medical probiotic, bile acid derivative, monoclonal antibody and curcumin.

Split-dose bowel prep now standard of care

Split dosing has consistently proved superior to evening-before dosing for bowel cleansing before colonoscopy. Same-day split-dose regimens may be even more effective.
