By focusing on environmental, psychosocial and organic factors contributing to challenging behavior, Mayo Clinic's Dementia-Behavioral Assessment and Response Team (D-BART) is changing the standard of care for people with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.

Study seeks to improve caregiver QOL

Given the proven ability of a structured, multidisciplinary intervention to improve quality of life (QOL) for patients with advanced-stage cancer, Mayo researchers have designed a similar program for cancer caregivers.

Biomarker development crucial to ketamine use in depressive disorders
In studies, subanesthesia doses of ketamine rapidly improve mood and suicidal ideation in some patients with depressive disorders. Research is now underway to determine how the drug works and which patients are likely to respond to it.

Varenicline may help bipolar patients stop smoking
Patients with bipolar disorder who smoke have lower response rates to mood-stabilizing drugs than nonsmokers do. A small study suggests varenicline may be a feasible option for reducing tobacco use in these patients.
