Chronic Chest Pain

Overview

Mayo Clinic is a premier medical center for diagnosing and treating chronic (ongoing) chest pain. Chronic chest pain can have many causes, only some of which are heart-related. Mayo Clinic routinely brings together a variety of specialists, including cardiologists, to accurately diagnose and effectively treat chest pain.

NOTE: If you have sudden, new or unevaluated symptoms of chest pain, do not delay seeking medical attention. Immediately call 911 or seek other medical attention.

Diagnosis

Chronic chest pain may be not only life-threatening, but physically, psychologically and economically debilitating. At Mayo Clinic, patients can expect to have several specialized tests designed to pinpoint the cause of chest pain. Read more about chronic chest pain diagnosis.

Treatment Options

Depending on the cause, type and severity of chest pain, a variety of options are available to Mayo Clinic patients, including medication, medical devices and surgery. Mayo Clinic also offers innovative options such as access to clinical research studies, EECP, TMR and spinal cord stimulation. Read more about chronic chest pain treatment options.

About Chest Pain

Chest pain is one of the most common reasons people call for emergency medical help. Chest pain doesn't always signal a heart attack. Often it's unrelated to the heart. But even if the chest pain does not involve the cardiovascular system, the problem may still be important — and worth the time spent in an emergency room having it evaluated.
