At Mayo Clinic, researchers are working to make stomach cancer treatment more effective and less disruptive to patients' lives. Their studies focus on finding stomach cancer earlier, tailoring treatments to each person's cancer, and developing less invasive surgical techniques that can speed recovery and preserve quality of life. An example is endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), which uses special cutting tools and can remove larger areas of tissue in one piece.

Through the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, patients have access to clinical trials studying new therapies. These include targeted treatments, immunotherapies and innovative surgical approaches that may offer additional options when standard treatments are not enough.

Researchers also are studying genetic markers that could help doctors predict which treatments are most likely to work. This research may help make care more personalized for people with stomach cancer.

Researchers also are working to understand early-onset stomach cancer. This condition, which occurs in younger people, often is genetically and clinically distinct from cancer that happens in older people.
