Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Accumulation of pus or swollen, red, tender area of infection around the rectum
  2. Black tarry stools
  3. blood in urine or stools
  4. cough or hoarseness
  5. fever or chills
  6. lower back or side pain
  7. painful or difficult urination
  8. pinpoint red spots on skin
  9. sores, ulcers, or white spots on lips, tongue, or inside mouth
  10. unusual bleeding or bruising
  11. unusual tiredness or weakness

Less common

  1. Abdominal pain or tenderness
  2. blurred vision
  3. confusion
  4. dark urine
  5. diarrhea
  6. dizziness, faintness, or light-headedness
  7. fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse
  8. fever
  9. itching
  10. nausea
  11. palpitations
  12. convulsions (seizures)
  13. vomiting or vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
  14. yellow eyes or skin

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More Common

  1. Burning, crawling, numbness, prickling, “pins and needles”, or tingling feelings
  2. headache

Less common

  1. Bleeding gums
  2. difficulty swallowing
  3. hives
  4. loss of appetite
  5. loss of strength or energy
  6. muscle or bone pain
  7. pain or redness at site of injection
  8. rash
  9. redness and swelling of gums

This medicine often causes a temporary loss of hair. After treatment with amsacrine has ended, normal hair growth should return.
