Survival rates are estimates based on groups of people with the same type of cancer. Survival rates are based on people treated in previous years and may not reflect newer treatments. They can give a general idea of prognosis, which is sometimes referred to as outlook. But they can't predict what will happen to one person.

Survival varies depending on where the cancer starts and how far it has spread. A tumor that is small and has not spread to other areas tends to have a better prognosis. The type of treatment also can affect outcome.

Leiomyosarcoma can come back after treatment. This is called a recurrence.

What affects survival

Factors that may affect the outlook for leiomyosarcoma include:

• Where the cancer started.
• The stage of the cancer and whether it has spread.
• The tumor grade, which gives clues about how quickly the cancer may grow and spread.
• Whether surgery can remove all visible cancer.
• Your overall health.
• How the cancer responds to treatment.
