Mayo Clinic researchers study left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) and other heart-assist devices. Mayo Clinic researchers participate in clinical trials for ventricular assist devices and publish research findings.

Areas of research have included:
- Less invasive ways to implant a VAD.
- The risk of infection and how to treat infection after getting an LVAD.
- Understanding how an LVAD affects blood flow to the heart and the rest of the body.
- How well patients do after LVAD surgery.
- How to prevent and manage VAD complications.
- How people considering LVAD destination therapy make decisions about their care. This is called shared decision-making intervention.
