Research

Mayo Clinic researchers study left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) and other heart-assist devices. Mayo Clinic researchers participate in clinical trials for ventricular assist devices and publish research findings.

You may have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. Learn more about cardiovascular research in the Cardiovascular Research Center.

Areas of research have included:

  • Less invasive ways to implant a VAD.
  • The risk of infection and how to treat infection after getting an LVAD.
  • Understanding how an LVAD affects blood flow to the heart and the rest of the body.
  • How well patients do after LVAD surgery.
  • How to prevent and manage VAD complications.
  • How people considering LVAD destination therapy make decisions about their care. This is called shared decision-making intervention.
