The Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic is fully integrated with all the medical services available throughout the hospital. More than 180 radiologists and physicists cooperate with 1,100 support staff to provide diagnostic and therapeutic radiology services, including SPECT imaging, to people from all over the world.
State-of-the-art technology
Over a century old, Mayo Clinic's Department of Radiology was one of the first of its kind. Mayo's campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota all have state-of-the-art SPECT scanners. Some of the machines are combined SPECT and CT scanners, which yield enhanced images.

Mayo Clinic's highly specialized radiology teams perform and interpret nearly 10,000 SPECT scans each year. This large number of cases, integrated with ongoing research and education, results in broad expertise in the imaging and treatment of diseases affecting people of all ages.
Research leaders
Researchers at Mayo Clinic are dedicated to studying and developing new techniques and applications for SPECT imaging, including several clinical trials. Current studies involve evaluating the effectiveness of a specific radioactive tracer in identifying prostate cancer, as well as testing of the new Veriton SPECT system to see if it can achieve better imaging quality and reduced scanning times compared with a standard SPECT system.
