Los coágulos de sangre son masas gelatinosas de sangre. Son beneficiosos cuando se forman como respuesta a una lesión o a un corte, ya que taponan el vaso sanguíneo lesionado, y el sangrado se detiene.
Algunos coágulos de sangre se forman en el interior de las venas sin un bueno motivo y no se disuelven en forma natural. Posiblemente requieran atención, especialmente si se sitúan en las piernas o en lugares más críticos, como los pulmones o el cerebro. Este tipo de coágulo de sangre puede deberse a distintas enfermedades.
