Pentazocine (Injection Route)

Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

Rare

1. Black, tarry stools
2. blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
3. chest pain
4. chills
5. cough
6. diarrhea
7. fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse
8. fever
9. itching
10. joint or muscle pain
11. painful or difficult urination
12. red, irritated eyes
13. red skin lesions, often with a purple center
14. shakiness in the legs, arms, hands, or feet
15. sore throat
16. sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth
17. swelling or puffiness of the face
18. swollen glands
19. trembling or shaking of the hands or feet
20. trouble breathing
21. unusual bleeding or bruising
22. unusual tiredness or weakness

Incidence not known

1. Blistering, crusting, irritation, itching, or reddening of the skin
2. blue-green to black skin discoloration
3. bluish lips or skin
4. blurred vision
5. burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, "pins and needles", or tingling feelings
6. cold, clammy skin
7. confusion
8. cough
9. cracked, dry, or scaly skin
10. decrease in the frequency of urination
11. decrease in urine volume
12. depression
13. difficult or troubled breathing
14. difficulty in passing urine (dribbling)
15. dizziness
16. fainting
17. fast or slow heartbeat
18. fast, weak pulse
19. flushed skin
20. hardening or thickening of the skin
21. headache
22. increased sweating
23. irregular, fast, slow, or shallow breathing
24. lightheadedness
25. nervousness
26. pain, redness, or sloughing of the skin at the injection site
27. pale or blue lips, fingernails, or skin
28. pounding in the ears
29. rapid breathing
30. small lumps under the skin at the injection site
31. stinging at the injection site
32. sweating
33. swelling of the lower legs or arms
34. tightness in the chest
35. very slow breathing
36. weight gain

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

1. False or unusual sense of well-being
2. nausea
3. vomiting

Rare

1. Change in taste
2. confusion about identity, place, and time
3. constricted, pinpoint, or small pupils (black part of the eye)
4. double vision
5. seeing double seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there
6. stomach cramps
7. trouble sleeping
8. uncontrolled eye movements

Incidence not known

1. Continuing ringing or buzzing or other unexplained noise in the ears
2. difficulty having a bowel movement (stool)
3. difficulty in focusing the eyes
4. disturbed dreams
5. drowsiness
6. dry mouth
7. excitement
8. hearing loss
9. irritability
10. relaxed and calm
11. sleepiness
12. trouble sleeping
13. weakness
