Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Absent, missed, or irregular menstrual periods
  2. menstrual changes
  3. stopping of menstrual bleeding

Less common

  1. Breast pain
  2. cramps
  3. heavy bleeding
  4. increased clear or white vaginal discharge
  5. itching of the vagina or genital area
  6. pain during sexual intercourse
  7. swelling
  8. thick, white vaginal discharge with no odor or with a mild odor

Incidence not known

  1. Anxiety
  2. black, tarry stools
  3. blood in the stools
  4. burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, "pins and needles", or tingling feelings
  5. changes in skin color
  6. chest pain or tightness
  7. chills
  8. clay-colored stools
  9. clear or bloody discharge from the nipple
  10. cough
  11. dark urine
  12. decrease in height
  13. difficult or labored breathing
  14. difficulty with swallowing
  15. dimpling of the breast skin
  16. dizziness or lightheadedness
  17. dull ache or feeling of pressure or heaviness in the legs
  18. fainting
  19. fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse
  20. fever
  21. general feeling of discomfort or illness
  22. headache
  23. hives, itching, or rash
  24. increased thirst
  25. inverted nipple
  26. itching skin near damaged veins
  27. loss of appetite
  28. lump in the breast or under the arm
  29. nausea
  30. no sensation in the legs
  31. noisy breathing
  32. pain in the back, ribs, arms, or legs
  33. pain, redness, tenderness, or swelling of the arm, foot, or leg
  34. pale skin
  35. persistent crusting or scaling of the nipple
  36. puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  37. redness or swelling of the breast
  38. seizures
  39. sore on the skin of the breast that does not heal
  40. stomach pain
  41. swelling
  42. swollen feet and ankles
  43. trouble breathing
  44. unable to move the legs
  45. unpleasant breath odor
  46. unusual bruising or bleeding
  47. unusual tiredness or weakness
  48. vomiting of blood
  49. yellow eyes or skin

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  1. Decreased interest in sexual intercourse
  2. inability to have or keep an erection
  3. increased weight
  4. loss in sexual ability, desire, drive, or performance
  5. nervousness
  6. stomach discomfort

Less common

  1. Backache
  2. blemishes on the skin
  3. bloating
  4. depression
  5. difficulty with moving
  6. feeling of warmth
  7. hair loss or thinning of the hair
  8. lack or loss of strength
  9. leg cramps
  10. muscle pain or stiffness
  11. pain in the joints
  12. pimples
  13. redness of the face, neck, arms, and occasionally, upper chest
  14. sudden sweating
  15. trouble sleeping

Incidence not known

  1. Bleeding, blistering, burning, coldness, discoloration of skin, feeling of pressure, hives, infection, inflammation, itching, lumps, numbness, pain, rash, redness, scarring, soreness, stinging, swelling, tenderness, tingling, ulceration, or warmth at the injection site
  2. brown, blotchy spots on the exposed skin
  3. changes in appetite
  4. diarrhea
  5. drowsiness
  6. dry skin
  7. hoarseness
  8. increased hair growth, especially on the face
  9. increased in sexual ability, desire, drive, or performance
  10. increased interest in sexual intercourse
  11. increased sweating and body odor
  12. indigestion
  13. loss of appetite
  14. passing of gas
  15. patchy brown or dark brown discoloration of the skin
  16. stomach pain, fullness, or discomfort
  17. swelling of the armpits
  18. unexpected or excess milk flow from breasts
