Proper Use

Take this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. If too much of this medicine is used for a long time, it may become habit-forming (causing mental or physical dependence) or cause an overdose.

This medicine comes with a Medication Guide and patient instructions. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.

You may take the medicine with or without food.

Place the whole film on top of your tongue. Do not take any liquid when using this medicine. Do not chew, spit, or talk while the film dissolves. If you need a second film, wait until the first film dissolves before using a second film.

You may swallow the tablet whole or break it in half along the score. If you are unable to swallow the tablet, it may be crushed and mixed in applesauce.

Shake the oral liquid before each dose. Use the bottle adapter and dosing syringe in the package to measure the right dose. Wash the syringe after each use and air dry. Do not put the syringe in the dishwasher.

Dosing

The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

  • For oral dosage forms (film, suspension, or tablets):
    • For seizures:
      • Adults and children 2 years of age and older weighing more than 30 kilograms (kg)—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The starting dose is usually 10 milligrams (mg) per day, given as 2 divided doses per day. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed. However, the dose is usually not more than 40 mg per day.
      • Adults and children 2 years of age and older weighing 30 kg or less—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The starting dose is usually 5 mg as a single dose per day. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed. However, the dose is usually not more than 20 mg per day.
      • Older adults—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The starting dose is usually 5 mg as a single dose per day. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed. However, the dose is usually not more than 40 mg per day.
      • Children younger than 2 years of age—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Storage

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

Ask your healthcare professional how you should dispose of any medicine you do not use.

Throw away any unused oral liquid 90 days after the bottle is opened for the first time.
