Panorama general

Mayo Clinic specialists in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) help restore movement and function to people disabled by disease or injury. PM&R physicians, called physiatrists (pronounced fiz-e-AT-rists), diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves and the musculoskeletal system. They provide treatment and rehabilitation options, which consider the unique needs, abilities and objectives of each patient.

You may come to Mayo Clinic on your own or with a referral from your primary care doctor. At Mayo Clinic's campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota, physiatrists work closely with a multidisciplinary team of physical therapists, occupational therapists and other rehabilitation professionals who collaborate to provide exactly the care you need.

  • PM&R physicians may offer musculoskeletal diagnostic ultrasound or ultrasound-guided injections or both.
  • PM&R physicians have a variety of subspecialties including sports medicine, brain injury, cancer, regenerative medicine, integrative medicine, spinal cord injury, spine, pain management, and work rehabilitation.
  • The PM&R team may offer treatment options that include physical modalities such as manual therapy, custom orthotics, ultrasound, acupuncture and therapeutic exercise to improve function.
  • PM&R staff members also provide many patient education opportunities to help you understand your medical condition and rehabilitative care.

Other services that may be offered based on your specific needs include
