Tips for staying focused while working at home

More and more people are being asked to work from home. For some people, this is a regular part of the work routine. Other people are adjusting to a whole new work setup.

How can you stay focused and avoid distractions while working from home? Here are some ideas from real remote workers.

  • Set up a designated work area. It should be quiet and free of distractions like family members or televisions.
  • Pay attention to ergonomics. Avoid carpal tunnel syndrome with a desk at the right level and a comfortable chair.
  • Set times when you start and end work. Schedule breaks and take them on time. During your work time, focus on your job. Ignore or delay any distractions until after your work hours are over. (Except emergencies, of course.)
  • Train your family not to interrupt work. Let your family know that when you're working, they should not disturb you.
  • Stay off social media during work hours. Unless being on social media is part of your job, resist the urge to check your notifications. A quick 5 minutes to check Facebook can easily turn into an hour of reading stories online.
  • Know when to log off. Some remote workers have trouble shutting work off and leaving it behind at the end of the day. That's why designated work areas and scheduled shifts are so important.
  • Take a walk. Getting outside during your break can help clear your head so you can refocus. Plus, moving around is a good way to avoid being sedentary all day.
