Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., is a gastroenterologist, physician-scientist and internationally recognized leader in digestive diseases. His work has transformed the understanding and treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders. As President and CEO of Mayo Clinic, he continues to champion a vision of healthcare that combines exceptional patient care, scientific innovation and collaborative teamwork to improve outcomes for patients around the world.

Dr. Farrugia specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complex gastrointestinal motility disorders, including gastroparesis and chronic constipation. His research focuses on understanding digestive diseases at the cellular and molecular level, with the goal of identifying the underlying causes of disease rather than simply managing symptoms. Through decades of investigation, he has helped advance knowledge of smooth muscle physiology, interstitial cells of Cajal, ion channel regulation and the mechanisms that control normal gastrointestinal function.

His approach to patient care is grounded in a simple principle: understanding disease biology leads to better treatments and better outcomes. "Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for designing rational strategies to treat symptoms of disease, and for reversing the underlying defect," he says. "My goal is to deliver better answers, better treatments and more hope to improve the lives of patients with debilitating digestive disorders."
