The Village at Mayo Clinic
Transplant patients undergoing treatment at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Ariz., will soon have an alternate lodging option.
The Village at Mayo Clinic is being built on Mayo's Phoenix campus as a low-cost, extended stay lodging option for transplant patients. The Arizona Transplant House, which currently houses transplant patients, can no longer accommodate the growing number of Mayo transplant patients.
The Village will also provide lodging for some cancer patients coming to Mayo Clinic for extended treatment, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society.
Construction began in July 2008. Plans call for The Village at Mayo Clinic to include nine Southwestern style "casitas," surrounding a central community center. Each casita will be approximately 4,900 square feet and will have six bedrooms and six bathrooms. The nine casitas will accommodate about 70 patients and family members. The Village's purpose is to foster a healing environment, friendship with other patients, and a sense of community.
Completion of The Village at Mayo Clinic is entirely dependent on contributions. Enough funds are currently available to finish two or three casitas, with a projected completion date of spring 2009.
