Throat Cancer

Overview

Otorhinolaryngologists at Mayo Clinic surgically treat approximately 700 throat and other head and neck cancer patients each year. Mayo's approach includes multiple new surgical procedures that remove the cancer while maintaining function and cosmetic appearance as much as possible. Patients also receive the latest advances in radiation therapy and other oncology services. Throat cancer patients have access to the resources of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. Designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, Mayo Clinic ranks among the top cancer centers in the United States for cancer research.

Diagnosis

To properly diagnose and stage throat cancer, Mayo Clinic physicians may gather and examine a tissue sample (biopsy) as they examine the throat using a mirror or fiberoptic instrument. Additionally, physicians inspect X-rays, ultrasound images, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, PET scans and computed tomography (CT) scans. Read more about diagnosis of throat cancer.

Treatment Options

Mayo Clinic physicians work together to give cancer patients the most appropriate care. They consider each patient's type and stage of throat cancer, general health and preferences before recommending a treatment plan. Physicians use specialized forms of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and rehabilitative services to treat throat cancer. Read more about treatment options for throat cancer.

About Throat Cancer

Throat cancer often develops from squamous cells on the mucosal surfaces of the larynx, pharynx or mouth. Smoking cigarettes and drinking large quantities of alcohol can increase a person's risk for developing throat cancer. Head and neck cancers account for about 5 percent of cancers in the United States. Throat cancers usually develop around age 60, and men are 10 times more likely to develop them than women.
