Emergency Communications Center Dispatch Services

The Mayo Clinic Emergency Communications Center (ECC) coordinates delivery of the following services:

  • Gold Cross, an advanced life support ground ambulance, from locations in Minnesota and western Wisconsin
  • Mayo One, the emergency medical helicopter based in Rochester, Minn., Eau Claire, Wis., and Mankato, Minn.
  • Mayo MedAir, an air ambulance jet based in Rochester, Minn., that flies worldwide
  • CareFlight, an emergency medical helicopter air ambulance based in Sioux Falls, S.D.
  • Neonatal and pediatric specialty team transports by air and ground, as determined by a patient's age and condition

The ECC utilizes a RightCad dispatch computer system. Dispatchers activate the field staff via radio and alphanumeric paging and communicate through a vehicle-installed Nomad system. The ECC can monitor the location of the units throughout the call process.

Other services

The ECC also provides other emergency communication services, including:

  • Commercial Airlines emergency calls: The Emergency Communications Center responds to calls from select commercial and private aviation services providers when a passenger has a medical emergency onboard. The call is transferred to a flight nurse or emergency medicine consultant who provides instructions for patient support.
  • LifeLine alert: When LifeLine customers need medical assistance, they press a button on a bracelet or necklace, which connects to the ECC. The communications technician determines the appropriate response.
  • Incoming ambulance and aircraft patient reports: Ambulance and medical aircraft crews radio the ECC with status reports on patients coming to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, Minn. Communications technicians can quickly link them to an emergency room consultant when necessary.
  • Flight following: The communications technicians maintain contact with dispatched emergency medical helicopters to help ensure they meet industry and federal safety standards.
  • Mayo Clinic Preferred Response team: This team is based in the ECC, with medical and personnel resources available and shared with the ECC when determining transport arrangements.
