Helicopter — Mayo One
Mayo One, an emergency medical helicopter service, provides high-level critical care and rapid transportation. A helicopter can be in flight within minutes of dispatch, 24 hours a day, every day. Mayo One flies more than 1,000 flights a year.
Mayo One flies within a 150-mile radius of bases at:
- Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
- Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, Eau Claire, Wis.
- Mankato Regional Airport, Mankato, Minn.
Aircraft, aviation crew, maintenance and operations certificates are provided by Mayo Clinic.
The staff, medical equipment and medications on board make Mayo One a mobile emergency room equipped to handle nearly any patient with serious trauma injuries or who is critically ill. On-board equipment allows the flight team to monitor a patient's heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and carbon dioxide and oxygen levels. The flight team uses external defibrillators, external pacemakers and other advanced-level equipment. All Mayo One helicopters carry a portable lab analyzer that measures the patient's arterial or venous blood gases and other lab values. Mayo One crews follow a physician-directed protocol for initiating therapeutic hypothermia in select cases. Blood (3 units) and thawed plasma (3 units) is carried on every flight and can be administered inflight or at the referring hospital. Mayo One helicopter crews also carry tranexamic acid (TXA).
Mayo One crews began using TXA for eligible patients on July 9, 2012, when published data indicated it was beneficial for the trauma patient if given within 3 hours of injury. It is also approved for use in select patients who experience a medical head bleed. Mayo Clinic's blood administration guidelines call for the use of TXA for these patients when they meet criteria for pre-hospital administration of blood products.
Many insurers will cover some costs for emergency medical helicopter transport to the most appropriate medical facility in cases of acute injury or illness.
