Myocarditis

Overview

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium). Myocarditis may affect both the heart's muscle cells and the heart's electrical system, leading to reduction in the heart's pumping function and to irregular heart rhythms. The disease typically occurs in young, otherwise healthy people, but it can affect anyone.

Myocarditis may lead to more severe conditions including congestive heart failure or sudden cardiac death.

Why choose Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic doctors with training in heart disease (cardiologists) routinely evaluate and treat many people who have myocarditis. Doctors at Mayo Clinic have conducted extensive research and pioneered the current treatments of giant cell myocarditis, cardiac sarcoidosis and eosinophilic myocarditis.

Cardiologists work with a team of specialists from many areas to diagnose and treat people who have all forms of myocarditis. Doctors collaborate with your primary doctor at home to continue ongoing care and long-term follow-up after your treatment at Mayo Clinic.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., is ranked among the Best Hospitals for heart and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report. Mayo Clinic also ranks among the Best Children's Hospitals for heart and heart surgery.
