Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD)

The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) is a reliable measure of mortality risk in patients with end-stage liver disease. It is used as a disease severity index to help prioritize allocation of organs for transplant.

Mayo Clinic researchers published the original MELD model in 2001. Refinements have been developed since then. These models are for use by medical professionals.

Other models

See other mathematical models for liver disease patients:

  • Survival probability of a patient with primary biliary cirrhosis without treatment
  • Short-term survival probability of a patient with primary biliary cirrhosis
  • Outcome of liver transplantation in patients with PBC and PSC
  • Survival probability of a patient with primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • The alcoholic liver disease/nonalcoholic fatty liver disease index
