Lymphedema

Overview

Mayo Clinic physicians in multiple medical specialties work together to ensure an accurate diagnosis and complete evaluation of each patient. Mayo physicians evaluate more than 650 new patients each year. Physical and occupational therapists have advanced training in complete lymphedema treatments through the nationally recognized educational centers of Klose, Norton and Zuther. The team of physicians and therapists work with each patient to provide patient and family education, reduce swelling, develop an individualized, manageable home program and arrange for long-term follow-up as needed.

Diagnosis

Swelling occurs for many different reasons. Mayo Clinic doctors perform a thorough physical examination of the patient to determine the cause of the swelling. This evaluation may be followed by various scans and additional tests. Read more about lymphedema diagnosis.

About Lymphedema

Lymphedema refers to swelling due to abnormalities of the lymphatic system. It occurs most often in an arm or leg though it can be present in the trunk and face. A person can be born with lymphedema (such types are rare), or the condition can occur after surgery, trauma, infection or radiation treatment.
