Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Aggressive behavior
  2. agitation
  3. anxiety
  4. changes in vision, including blurred vision
  5. difficulty concentrating
  6. difficulty speaking or swallowing
  7. inability to move the eyes
  8. increase in amount of urine
  9. loss of balance control
  10. mask-like face
  11. memory problems
  12. muscle spasms of the face, neck, and back
  13. problems with urination
  14. restlessness or need to keep moving (severe)
  15. shuffling walk
  16. skin rash or itching
  17. stiffness or weakness of the arms or legs
  18. tic-like or twitching movements
  19. trembling and shaking of the fingers and hands
  20. trouble sleeping
  21. twisting body movements

Less common

  1. Back pain
  2. chest pain
  3. speech or vision problems
  4. sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arms, or legs

Rare

  1. Confusion
  2. dizziness
  3. drowsiness
  4. extreme thirst
  5. fast, shallow breathing
  6. fast, weak heartbeat
  7. headache
  8. increased thirst
  9. lip smacking or puckering
  10. loss of appetite
  11. muscle cramps
  12. pale, clammy skin
  13. poor coordination
  14. prolonged, painful, inappropriate erection of the penis
  15. puffing of the cheeks
  16. rapid or worm-like movements of the tongue
  17. shivering
  18. talking, feeling, and acting with excitement and activity that cannot be controlled
  19. uncontrolled chewing movements
  20. uncontrolled twisting movements of the neck, trunk, arms, or legs
  21. unusual bleeding or bruising
  22. unusual facial expressions or body positions

Incidence not known

  1. Abnormal growth filled with fluid or semisolid material
  2. accumulation of pus
  3. black, tarry stools
  4. bleeding gums
  5. bloating
  6. blood in the urine or stools
  7. bluish lips or skin
  8. break in the skin, especially associated with blue-black discoloration, swelling, or drainage of fluid
  9. change in mental status
  10. chills
  11. clumsiness
  12. cold sweats
  13. collection of blood under the skin
  14. constipation
  15. cough
  16. dark urine
  17. decrease in the frequency of urination
  18. decreased awareness or responsiveness
  19. decreased urine output
  20. deep, dark purple bruise
  21. depression
  22. diarrhea
  23. dry mouth
  24. fainting
  25. fast or irregular heartbeat
  26. fever
  27. flushed, dry skin
  28. fruit-like breath odor
  29. hives
  30. hostility
  31. inability to move the eyes
  32. increased blinking or spasms of the eyelid
  33. increased hunger
  34. indigestion
  35. irregular heartbeat, recurrent
  36. irritability
  37. large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or genitals
  38. loss of consciousness
  39. low body temperature
  40. mimicry of speech or movements
  41. muscle ache, twitching, or weakness
  42. nausea
  43. nervousness
  44. nightmares
  45. painful urination
  46. pains in the stomach, side, or abdomen, possibly radiating to the back
  47. peculiar postures or movements, mannerisms, or grimacing
  48. pinpoint red spots on the skin
  49. puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  50. rapid weight gain
  51. red irritated eyes
  52. red skin lesions, often with a purple center
  53. seizures
  54. severe constipation
  55. severe sleepiness
  56. severe vomiting
  57. shakiness
  58. small lumps under the skin
  59. sore throat
  60. sores on the skin
  61. sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on the lips
  62. sticking out of the tongue
  63. stomach pain
  64. swelling of the face, ankles, or hands
  65. swollen, red, tender area of infection
  66. tightness in the chest
  67. trouble breathing
  68. twitching, twisting, uncontrolled repetitive movements of the tongue, lips, face, arms, or legs
  69. unexplained weight loss
  70. unusual drowsiness, dullness, tiredness, weakness, or feeling of sluggishness
  71. vomiting
  72. weak or feeble pulse
  73. weight gain
  74. yellow eyes or skin

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  1. Heartburn
  2. increased dream activity
  3. increased length of sleep
  4. stuffy or runny nose

Less common

  1. Absent, missed, or irregular menstrual periods
  2. acid or sour stomach
  3. belching
  4. bleeding, blistering, burning, discoloration of the skin, infection, inflammation, itching, lumps, numbness, pain, rash, redness, soreness, stinging, swelling, tenderness, tingling, or warmth at the injection site
  5. body aches or pain
  6. breast swelling or soreness
  7. cramps
  8. dandruff
  9. darkening of skin color
  10. decreased interest in sexual intercourse
  11. dry skin
  12. ear congestion
  13. heavy bleeding
  14. inability to have or keep an erection
  15. increase in body movements
  16. increased watering of the mouth
  17. joint pain
  18. lack or loss of strength
  19. loss in sexual ability, desire, drive, or performance
  20. loss of voice
  21. oily skin
  22. pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones
  23. sneezing
  24. stopping of menstrual bleeding
  25. toothache
  26. unusual breast milk production
  27. weight loss

Incidence not known

  1. Acne
  2. change in taste
  3. enlargement of the penis or testes
  4. growth of pubic hair
  5. loss or thinning of the hair
  6. loss of taste
  7. rapid increase in height
  8. sleepwalking
