Consultative practice

By Mayo Clinic Staff

The consultative practice provides outpatient health care to people who come to Mayo Clinic from within the United States and live outside of Olmsted County in Minnesota.

Doctors in this practice provide comprehensive, coordinated and efficient care with diagnostic and therapeutic expertise. Also, staff specializes in coordinating the complex care needs of people requiring additional care in specific specialty areas.

Mayo Clinic doctors provide medical care in collaboration with your local primary doctor. Adults usually are referred from regional clinics when they require the expertise and highly specialized care at Mayo Clinic. You also may self-refer to this practice, but you should have a local doctor for primary care issues.

Consultative staff provides comprehensive examinations and also provides consultations for specific complex medical problems. Subspecialty and surgical consultations often are integrated to accommodate your needs. Doctors also facilitate communication with your local primary doctor to coordinate your care.

The consultative practice is involved in ongoing efforts to study health care delivery and innovation systems, health care quality, and clinical research. Members of the practice maintain close educational ties with Mayo Medical School, Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education Internal Medicine Residency and several Mayo fellowship programs in general medical fields.
