Chemical Peel

Overview

During a chemical peel, a solution applied to the skin causes a chemical burn that peels away the top layers of skin and stimulates regrowth of new, younger-looking skin.

At Mayo Clinic, chemical peels are performed exclusively by board-certified physicians, physician's assistants and nurses. Qualified, experienced providers assess your needs and skin type to determine the most appropriate peel treatment. Providers will discuss the options with you. This level of consultation and expertise is typically not available at spas and salons that offer chemical peels. Improper treatment from an unqualified provider can cause infection and permanent skin scarring and discoloration.

The depth of a chemical peel and type of acid solution used are determined by the doctor, based on the extent of wrinkles and skin damage, and your goals and skin type.

Types of Peels

Mayo specialists perform two kinds of acid peels:

  • Superficial peel
  • Medium-depth peel

Learn about the types of chemical peel.

Chemical peels are especially effective for the fine wrinkles around the mouth, cheeks, eyes and forehead, and when performed three to six months following a face-lift or eyelid surgery. A partial peel may be combined with other facial treatments to enhance results. Skin peels also can be used to diminish brown skin discoloration, minor acne scars, oily, red or scaly skin, and pore size. The procedure is not used to treat large pores or serious acne scars.
