Laura E. Raffals, M.D.

Laura Evelyn Harrell Raffals, M.D., M.S., is a gastroenterologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, specializing in the care of people with complex gastrointestinal conditions. Dr. Raffals provides expert treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and complex pouch disorders. Her clinical practice also includes performing advanced diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy and upper endoscopy to support comprehensive care.

Dr. Raffals' research focuses on improving outcomes for people with inflammatory bowel disease, particularly those with pouch-related complications. She is co-principal investigator for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation SPARC IBD cohort, a nationwide adult research network, and leads multiple clinical trials funded by the NIH and foundations. Her work explores novel treatments, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy and advanced therapies for severe ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. She is a frequently invited speaker and educator nationally and internationally and has received numerous awards for teaching and leadership in gastroenterology.

Board-certified in gastroenterology, Dr. Raffals also serves as a mentor and leader within Mayo Clinic and across the gastroenterology community.

Personal note

Outside of work, Dr. Raffals enjoys time with her husband and two teenage daughters — cheering them on at sporting events — along with working out, cooking, reading, and hiking in the mountains whenever possible.
